Key Things to Think About When Buying a Used Forklift

If you’re considering purchasing a second hand forklift rather than a brand new truck, this can be quite a cost-effective choice for your business. However, it’s always important to make some careful considerations before making a decision. If you are buying used, then it’s essential that you check the quality of the machinery and assess its longevity value.

Here’s some key things to think about before you buy…

Take note of age and usage

Experts in the industry agree that a forklift that’s been used for an hour is the equivalent of a car that’s been driven 50km. So, it’s always important to take note of the amount of hours of usage a used forklift truck has accumulated. Check over the ‘mileage’ to see that it’s low, and it’s also a good idea to make sure the lifting mechanism still works efficiently and smoothly.

Ensure it’s suitable for the job

It may sound simple but it can be all too easy to end up buying a type of forklift that isn’t suitable for the job you need it for. Leaving you with wasted time as you have to return the piece of machinery. Take time to find out the important details, like how long you’ll need it for and it’s lift capacity for example. Even if the exact type of forklift you need for a particular job is more expensive, it’s better than opting for a cheaper less suitable model, as this will just end up costing you more down the line.

Look at the long term running costs

It may be cheaper to buy used, in terms of upfront costs, but you also need to carefully consider the costs of maintaining and running the forklift you choose. Don’t just judge your deal on the up front price you’re initially getting. Get a feel for the forklift, and check over all the essential elements, like the wheels, controls and engine etc. Look into the price of spare parts and make sure they are readily available.

Check it’s been well maintained

Engineers should keep a record of any past maintenance a forklift has undergone. And used forklifts will also have a certificate, which should confirm that the machinery has had a thorough examination. So it’s very important to see a copy of this certificate before buying.

At H&F Lift Trucks, we supply a range of fully serviced and reliable used forklift trucks at great prices.

Testimonials

H&F have supplied us with all our fork lift equipment for in excess of ten years now, and have maintained it in accordance with our stringent operation requirements. During this time they have provided a consistently high level of service (including short term hire when required) whilst never failing to support us in a totally honest and professional manner.

Ashley Basset, Director

H&F Lift Trucks are a pleasure to deal with. All staff, Technicians, Sales and Directors have hands-on experience of all ranges of vehicles they supply. From initial assessments and listening to all users of a potential new vehicle requirement, they keep us informed of all aspects of specification and lead times through to delivery. Their maintenance service is superb – they organise suitable times around our busy working day with our Yard Managers. Any accidental damage or operator error faults are always discussed with me and dealt with fairly – not like some unscrupulous suppliers who seek to profit at every service visit! In a cut-throat market, where we are offered “good deals” a few quid cheaper every day, we are never tempted to stray.
