Basic operator training
It’s a legal requirement for forklift operators to undergo initial training and receive a basic operator training qualification, for example a RTITB Forklift Operation Certificate. It is during this training that you learn things like general machine safety, maneuvering, vehicle loading and maintenance procedures. This type of certificate doesn’t expire but that doesn’t mean that training should stop.
That’s because the nature of the industry is constantly changing with new practices, updated health and safety regulations, and new products and technology emerging regularly..
That’s why forklift truck operators should use this basic training as a springboard from which they increase their knowledge and expertise through refresher training.
Every workplace is difference
Learning how to operate a forklift truck is essential but each and every workplace setting is different – and comes with its own set of hazards. It’s essential for forklift operators to have training that is specific to their workplace environment. This could relate to the layout of a warehouse or factory, certain internal procedures and even things relating to specific industries.
For example, it would be necessary for a forklift truck operator to learn about food hygiene regulations within the food industry to avoid cross contamination. And similarly, it would be necessary for a forklift truck operator to learn about pedestrian and truck line markings in a busy warehouse to avoid an accident or collision.
Issues such as speed limits, tight corners, ramps or outdoor work should also be taken into account and the relevant information given to operators.
Forklift trucks can differ from one another
If you upgrade your fleet of forklift trucks or have an influx of new staff, it’s essential that these operators are trained on your specific type of forklift truck and all its accessories.
Operators knowing their machines inside out could be the difference between an accident averted and a serious incident occurring. It also makes your business run more efficiently if each operator is thoroughly proficient with their machines.
Whether your company uses brand new forklifts, used forklifts or hires them for a set amount of time, ensure each and every operator has regular access to refresher training.
