How Do I Maintain My Forklift?

Buying a forklift can be expensive so you really want to maintain one to ensure that it stays as good as it can, performs well and gives you less need to “fork out” for a new one!

Maintenance of forklifts is never totally easy if you do not know what you are doing. This is especially the case if you invested in a used forklift. These used forklifts are already worn and may have wear and tear so you need to care for it very carefully and delicately, in much the same way as you would a second hand car.

You need to firstly ensure that all the parts have been treated with oil and lubricants. You can’t just do this once and forget it, you need to continuously oil the parts. This is because as soon as you start using the machine, even for a short while, the machine starts wearing out so you must ensure consistent oiling.

Also, if you notice any rusted parts of the forklift, then you should remember to get them replaced well in time, before the rust starts spreading. This will save you money in the long run. You should therefore keep a constant vigil eye on the forklift and if you identify any of the parts that are past their best, then look into replacing them before it is too late and your whole machine needs replacing! You should call the mechanic and have the machine examined. Straight away.

You also need to ensure you do not put lots of tons of weight on the forklift which it is not capable of lifting. You need to keep the weights moderate so that the machine does not struggle and break as a result. Rather than pile it all on, take two trips instead.

A final pointer is to ensure that the fork lifts are always in the right working mode when you work the vehicles. By choosing the wrong option, you could jeopardize the whole machine.

You also need to consider where you store the forklift overnight. Make sure it is a secure, damp-free zone. Any damp could leak into the engine and cause rust. Make sure you do not leave the machine for months at a time without moving it or stretching its legs!

By following these simple instructions, you can make sure that your forklift machine stays in the best working order.

Testimonials

H&F have supplied us with all our fork lift equipment for in excess of ten years now, and have maintained it in accordance with our stringent operation requirements. During this time they have provided a consistently high level of service (including short term hire when required) whilst never failing to support us in a totally honest and professional manner.

H&F Lift Trucks are a pleasure to deal with. All staff, Technicians, Sales and Directors have hands-on experience of all ranges of vehicles they supply. From initial assessments and listening to all users of a potential new vehicle requirement, they keep us informed of all aspects of specification and lead times through to delivery. Their maintenance service is superb – they organise suitable times around our busy working day with our Yard Managers. Any accidental damage or operator error faults are always discussed with me and dealt with fairly – not like some unscrupulous suppliers who seek to profit at every service visit! In a cut-throat market, where we are offered “good deals” a few quid cheaper every day, we are never tempted to stray.
